UMHS board adds two new members

The U-M Health System added two new members to its board on Thursday, after approval from the board of regents. The health system board advises the board of regents and health system leadership and provides governance. It is also acts as a governing body for licensing, accreditation, compliance, quality of medical services and related purposes. Bove stepping down as chair of cardiac surgery; Prager named interim chair

Edward L. Bove, M.D., will be stepping down as chair of the Department of Cardiac Surgery on Feb. 19. Bove became the inaugural chair in 2012, after various leadership roles in cardiac surgery. Under his leadership, he elevated cardiac surgery from a division to a department, and has facilitated substantial growth in all clinical areas. He also launched robust research programs in stem cell and outcomes research, and established an integrated six-year residency program. Michigan Medicine, Saint Joseph Mercy Health System moving forward with joint venture

The U-M board of regents approved on Thursday a master affiliation and joint venture between Saint Joseph Mercy Health System (SJMHS) and Michigan Medicine for the 133-bed St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea hospital. While both SMJHS and Michigan Medicine will have an interest in St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea, as the majority and managing partner SJMHS will provide leadership, nurses and staff and continue to oversee all hospital operations. An integral part of Michigan Medicine’s inpatient hospital operating system, MPLAN combines a two-part leadership model with a variety of tools — including visual management and daily huddles — that empower units to function operationally and solve problems on a local level. Apply now for diversity, equity and inclusion mini-grants

To continue its work in support of the university’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion five-year Strategic Plan, the Office for Health Equity and Inclusion (OHEI) is again offering mini-grants to promote a more diverse and inclusive environment at Michigan Medicine. All DEI implementation leads, faculty, staff and learners can apply for a grant for up to $5,000. OHEI is looking for innovative approaches to existing problems, with anticipated positive impact to the organization. Negotiations with nursing union begin next week

Contract negotiations between Michigan Medicine and University of Michigan Professional Nurse Council (UMPNC) will begin Jan. 29 and run through June 2018. The UMPNC represents more than 5,000 of the university’s nursing staff, and these members play a critical role in carrying out the organization’s patient care mission.
