The U-M board of regents approved on Thursday a master affiliation and joint venture between Saint Joseph Mercy Health System (SJMHS) and Michigan Medicine for the 133-bed St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea hospital.

While both SMJHS and Michigan Medicine will have an interest in St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea, as the majority and managing partner SJMHS will provide leadership, nurses and staff and continue to oversee all hospital operations.

This joint venture builds upon the existing Michigan Medicine family residency clinic located on the St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea campus since 1978. The surgical procedures provided by Michigan Medicine will expand at St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea, and patients in Chelsea and western Washtenaw County will have increased access to Michigan Medicine physicians. Construction will begin shortly on additional operating rooms at St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea, and other expanded services and surgical procedures will be explored as the partnership progresses.

All St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea staff will remain SJMHS employees, and no staff reductions will occur as a result of this agreement. All Michigan Medicine employees, including physicians, residents and house officers who work at Chelsea will remain employees of the University of Michigan.
