Making a Difference: January 2018 highlights

February 22, 2018  //  FOUND IN: Our Employees,

Employees across Michigan Medicine continue to make a difference through their hard work and dedication. Recognizing the contributions employees make to the organization helps the team to become more motivated, drives better teamwork and gives each individual a sense that they are an integral part of achieving organizational goals.

Here are just a few examples of how faculty and staff helped Michigan Medicine provide exceptional care and service last month:

Peer recognition

Sheila Reynolds, nurse aide II, 6A rehab

Sheila, you are always thinking of others. Recently, you told a family member to stay at the hospital and nap when you noted how exhausted she was and that the weather was too bad for her to travel safely. You offered her a warm blanket and a place to rest, where she slept soundly. When I told you how much I appreciated your kindness in that situation you responded humbly, “I just did what anybody should do.” I believe we get what we give. Sheila, I am so proud to work with you.

Brian Kazen, unit custodian, Environmental Services

It’s the little things in life that matter the most. Brian, you truly understand that. I wanted to thank you for taking just a few short moments to make a patient feel like he mattered as he went through some of his biggest health challenges. It not only meant so much to him but it meant just as much to our staff to know that our patients have a special spot in your heart. You’re appreciated for everything that you do!

Beth Hall, clinical nurse I, ob/gyn

Beth, when we left the clinic together, we walked right into a patient with a real medical crisis going on. We stood in the rain and you tossed your umbrella and your work bag and immediately started to help the patient. You did not ask if she needed help or if you could help — you just set aside everything you had planned to help a stranger and patient. Your dedication and concern is amazing! Thank you for being a great nurse and a great person.

Shawn Chapman, desktop support specialist intermediate, HITS

Shawn was a great help to me recently. He went above and beyond as he set up a new computer at my workstation. There were a lot of cords and connections to explain, from the laptop to the dual monitors to where to even dock the computer. He was very patient and explained things in a language I could understand. I am very happy to have Shawn on our support team! Thank you!

Patient to staff

Kristin Keith, physical therapist, PM&R

Kristin is an incredibly kind and compassionate physical therapist. When we first met, Kristin approached me not simply as a patient, but as a whole person. She spoke with such comfort and wisdom and her questions about my stress were out of genuine concern, not judgment. I looked forward to each of our appointments because I was given the time to fully relax and entrust my care to a wonderful therapist. I know she is doing great things for so many of her patients and I wanted her to know that not only is her physical therapy wonderful, but her approach and her personality make her work so greatly valued. Thank you, Kristin!

Kimberly Hoskins, nurse practitioner, Cancer Center

I will never be able to put into words how grateful I am for Kimberly’s support and action. Recently, Kim went out of her way to call down to see if they could get me in for a mammogram and ultrasound. She knew the stress of waiting and thinking the worst was going to be difficult for me and she was so empathetic and compassionate and did everything she could to help me. I truly appreciate her compassion, understanding and drive to provide me with the best care possible. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Thomas Fluent, M.D., associate professor of psychiatry

Dr. Fluent has the most uplifting spirit and really has a heart for all of the patients who come through his office. From our first visit, he has made it known that he is there to do whatever he can to help me cope with the situations I’ve had to endure. Even if I’m seeing someone else in the office, he makes it his business to stop in and say hello and crack a joke or two. You won’t leave his presence without a smile. Thanks, Dr. Fluent, for all the help and support you provide!

Family to staff

Isabelle McCormack, registered nurse, Emergency Services

Isabelle, you are making a difference because of your kindness, compassion, understanding and outstanding people skills. You made us feel like we could tell you anything, like we have known you for years and that you truly cared about our child. We appreciate your concern and patience and cannot thank you enough for making a very difficult time for our family much easier. You’re amazing!

Michigan Medicine faculty and staff

For the past 16 months, the hospital staff — from food service members to Environmental Services to the doctors — has proven over and over again what friends, family, and neighbors have said. “If you want the best care, go to U-M.” Thank you for providing and keeping such high standards of care. You are all truly exceptional.
