Explore new graduate program on science of learning health systems
Michigan Medicine faculty and staff are invited to lead health care improvement through transformative research and innovative development!
The Health Infrastructures and Learning Systems (HILS) program at U-M equips researchers and health leaders with the tools to solve some of the most complex health problems in the U.S. and abroad.
Cutting edge science
HILS is the nation’s first graduate program focused on the science and methods of learning health systems. Increasingly recognized in academic literature, learning health systems are the underpinning of wide-ranging health improvement movements nationally, globally and locally. The HILS program addresses the learning health systems core competencies. Above all, the program aims to improve the health of individuals and populations by developing practitioners and researchers who design, implement and evaluate innovative change and continuous improvement.
HILS attracts students with backgrounds from a variety of disciplines. The HILS M.S. and Ph.D. programs are well-suited to individuals with health professional backgrounds and others with experience working to improve health programs and systems. Prospective students should be passionate about collaboratively addressing the grand challenge of transforming health systems.
The HILS MS program is an accelerated, intensive study of health improvement processes, using learning health system methodology. The 27-credit program, which includes a summer implementation project, is designed to be completed in three semesters over 16 months.
The HILS Ph.D. program trains basic science researchers in learning health system science. The Ph.D. program is a minimum of 36 credits and includes a summer implementation project after the first year. Most of the HILS doctoral students have received at least four years of full funding through a Graduate Student Research Assistant appointment.
Fall open houses
Prospective students (and anyone else who’s interested in HILS) are invited to attend open houses on the medical campus with HILS faculty and current students:
- Wednesday, Oct. 25: 6 – 8 p.m.
- Monday, Nov. 13: 6 – 8 p.m.
REGISTER for a HILS Open House to receive a confirmation with location details.
HILS is housed in the Department of Learning Health Sciences, a basic science department in the U-M Medical School.
