Whether you or a family member has diabetes — or if you are concerned with learning how to prevent the development of diabetes — you can get information and see the latest in prevention and treatment options at the 11th Annual U-M Diabetes Health Fair on Saturday, Nov. 4.

The fair is open from 9 a.m. until noon and will be held at the Sheraton Ann Arbor Hotel (3200 Boardwalk, Ann Arbor). The fair is free and open to the public. No preregistration is necessary.

The event will offer five types of free health screenings, information tables and a presentation on what’s new in diabetes technology. Diabetes medical supply and pharmaceutical companies will be on hand to display their latest products and to answer questions. There will also be interactive displays and an activity corner for kids.

The purpose of the fair is to inform the public about managing all forms of diabetes, including type 1, type 2, prediabetes, and diabetes in pregnancy (gestational diabetes). Attendees will also learn about handling diabetes complications and, ideally, how to avoid complications and prevent type 2 diabetes.

This year, the following free health screenings will be offered (as time and supplies permit):

  • Blood glucose and A1c
  • Blood pressure
  • Body-mass (BMI) calculations and waist-to-hip ratios, to assess obesity and determine the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes
  • Medication review by the College of Pharmacy to check for potential complications and drug interactions.

Additional screenings offered only to people with diabetes include:

  • Foot screenings
  • Eye exams

For relatives of people with type 1 diabetes, the following will be made available:

  • Blood tests to check for antibodies, offered by the TrialNet Study.
  • Medication review by the College of Pharmacy, which will check for potential complications and drug interactions.

The annual event marks the American Diabetes Association’s American Diabetes Month and the United Nations’ World Diabetes Day, and is hosted by the diabetes programs at Michigan Medicine.
