Michigan Medicine is in the midst of a project to replace the majority of adult general care inpatient beds with Stryker S3 MedSurg beds. The project — which involves 635 beds total — is a coordinated effort on the part of Logistics and Support Services, the Office of Patient Experience, and faculty and staff on impacted units.

The work began on Oct. 15 and will continue on weekends over a five-week period.

“Beds are periodically replaced as they age, mitigating the wear and tear that can arise with aging equipment and technology,” said Frank Krupansky, director of logistics and support services. “The new beds go lower to the floor, weigh less, are simpler to maintain and have a seat drop feature so patients will not slide down the mattress when the head of the bed is raised.”

Substantial input was sought during the selection process.

“We worked with patients, families and staff to determine which features were most necessary and provided the best options for both the patient and the care team,” said Barbara Wetula, staff specialist, nursing administration.

Nurses are currently being educated on the new beds and will be well-equipped to handle patient questions and concerns.

“As always, our patients are the No. 1 priority,” Wetula said. “Nursing is working closely with the replacement team to make sure any operational concerns are addressed, resources are available and disruption to the patient is kept to a minimum.”

The current beds will be redistributed by Green River Medical, Inc., and used by humanitarian organizations focused on providing aid in developing countries.

“We’re proud to have a sustainable, impactful option for this equipment,” said Krupansky. “While the new beds will help improve the experience of Michigan Medicine patients, it’s great to know that the beds being removed will improve the experience of patients elsewhere.”
