President of U-M Health System reflects on past year

As the 2017 fiscal year came to a close, David Spahlinger, M.D., president of the U-M Health System, took a look back at the many accomplishments achieved in the health system over the past 12 months.

“These accomplishments are due to the work that you do and the commitment that you bring to our organization every day,” Spahlinger wrote to the health system’s faculty and staff.

Here are some highlights of the milestones achieved this year:

  • A 6.25 percent decrease in hospital acquired conditions (HACs), surpassing the target of 5 percent. This is particularly notable because the absolute number of HACs decreased while the patient base grew and acuity increased.
  • The organization’s overall patient satisfaction rate was 93.26 percent, surpassing both the FY17 target of 93 percent and the stretch goal of 93.2 percent.
  • The organization earned various forms of recognition, including:
    • Magnet status, the highest honor in nursing, from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
    • An “A” grade from the Leapfrog Group, establishing the organization as one of only two hospitals in Michigan to earn “straight As” in patient safety in every report since 2012.
    • Featured in 150 Great Place to Work 2016 from Becker’s Healthcare assessment of national health-care related companies.
    • C.S. Mott was nationally ranked in all 10 pediatric specialties by U.S. News & World Report, making it among just 23 hospitals nationwide ranked in all 10 areas in 2017-2018.
  • Achieved an operating margin of 5.9 percent, surpassing the goal of 3.8 percent.

“It was an incredible year, and we continue to have ambitious plans for FY18 and beyond,” Spahlinger wrote. “To support our clinical strategy and anticipated growth, we plan to reinvest our earnings and raise funds to make significant investments in our facilities, infrastructure, technology and our people.”

Among the upcoming plans:

  • An investment of $1.8 – $2 billion over the next five years to maintain and enhance existing facilities, expand current buildings and build new facilities. This also includes enhancements in IT and other support areas.
  • In FY18, investing an incremental $60 million in the merit salary program and in labor market adjustments in compensation.
  • As the Quality Department continues to evolve, focusing additional resources in infrastructure that support quality and safety initiatives across the entire health system.

“Our top priority remains improving the quality and safety of the care we provide our patients,” Spahlinger wrote.
