Asheesh Bedi, M.D., to lead new sports medicine center

Asheesh Bedi, M.D., has been appointed director of the newly formed Michigan Center for Human Athletic Medicine and Performance, also known as MCHAMP. The center will leverage the strengths of U-M’s internationally recognized intercollegiate athletic programs, world-class health system and highly-regarded sports medicine program (MedSport) to advance research, education and clinical care efforts in athletic performance and the prevention and treatment of sports injuries.

The Harold W. and Helen L. Gehring Early Career Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and associate professor of orthopaedic surgery in the Medical School, Bedi is the chief of sports medicine at Michigan Medicine and an adjunct assistant professor at the Hospital for Special Surgery/Weill Cornell Medical College in New York.

He is head orthopaedic team physician for U-M athletics and a team physician for the Detroit Lions. He is also head orthopaedic consultant for the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) and a consultant for the Detroit Red Wings, National Football League, and National Hockey League player’s associations. He specializes in arthroscopic and open surgery for athletic injuries of the shoulder, elbow, and knee, and is an internationally renowned surgeon of hip preservation.

Bedi graduated from the U-M Medical School with Alpha Omega Alpha recognition, and remained in Ann Arbor for residency training in orthopaedic surgery. He also completed a two-year fellowship in sports medicine and shoulder surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery/Weill Cornell Medical College.

Bedi is an active member of the American Shoulder Elbow Surgeons (ASES), American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) and Herodicus Sports Medicine Society. He is a two-time recipient of the ASES Neer Award and the AOSSM Cabaud Award for excellence in research. He has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications on shoulder, elbow, knee, and hip injuries in athletes, and edited three textbooks in orthopedic sports medicine.
