It’s National Nutrition Month: Five ways to eat healthier on the go

March 2, 2017  //  FOUND IN: Updates & Resources,

It’s lunch time and you’re starving. But you have no clue what to eat and you have a meeting in 30 minutes. Sound familiar?

It’s happened to everyone — but just because you’re eating on the go, doesn’t mean you should forget some healthy eating habits.

March is National Nutrition Month, which encourages putting your best fork forward, even when grabbing a quick meal or snack.

“Because many restaurants now offer a ‘healthy’ menu or allow you to substitute items, making healthier choices away from home has gotten easier,” said Erica Owen, manager of nutrition and weight management programs at MHealthy, the university’s health and well-being program. “Here at U-M, we’ve worked with many of the campus restaurants, cafeterias and vending machine vendors to offer and identify healthier options.”

Whether on campus or on the go, these five small changes can make a big difference so you don’t break the calorie bank:

  • Know what to avoid: As a general rule, avoid foods that say fried, buttered, creamed, crispy or breaded. Choose safer choices that say baked, grilled, roasted or steamed.
  • Customize your order: Don’t be afraid to ask for no mayo, sauces on the side or a salad instead of fries.
  • Drink water: Drinks with added sugars contribute empty calories, have little or no nutrition and won’t satisfy your hunger. Instead, quench your thirst by drinking water and save those calories for foods that are more filling.
  • Keep healthy snacks on hand:  Fresh fruit, granola bars and raw veggies are all easy options to throw in your bag or have at your desk to curb hunger. Forgot to pack a snack? Most vending machines at Michigan Medicine include healthier options — just look for the MHealthy logo.
  • Watch your portion size: Restaurants are notorious for mega-sized servings, so to avoid overeating, order the regular or child-sized portion, order an appetizer as your main course or share a meal with a friend.

During National Nutrition Month and all year-round, MHealthy provides nutrition programs, healthy dining resources, weight management programs and more.
