Stay well at work: Easy tips to keep active throughout your day

It’s not a stretch to say that the weather this time of year plays a major role in how active you are. But while it may be cold and dreary outside, there are plenty of ways for you to stay in shape — some without ever leaving your desk or unit!

Here are a few easy exercises and stretches that will boost your energy levels throughout your shift:

  1. Stretch your arms to the ceiling: You don’t need to go anywhere in order to put your muscles to good use. Stretch your arms to the ceiling. While holding this pose, push your shoulder blades back and down. This stretch can be done sitting or standing.
  2. Engage your core while seated: Are you spending much of your day in one position? Try practicing some mind body awareness. Sit up straight and engage your core muscles (drawing your belly button in toward your spine) while focusing on your breathing and how you feel.
  3. Do leg extensions: While sitting in your chair, raise one leg so it is parallel with the ground. While contracting and holding your core muscles, flex and point your toes multiple times to work your abs and legs. Switch to the other leg. It doesn’t seem like much, but it can make a big difference.
  4. Drop by instead of sending an email: Do you have to send a message to a colleague down the hall? Instead of sending an email, deliver the information in person. They’ll appreciate the visit and you’ll give your muscles a boost!

 

“Research continues to reveal the negative effects of staying stationary, whether sitting or standing, for long periods of time,” said Colleen Greene, senior wellness coordinator for MHealthy, the university’s health and well-being program.

“Moving for just a few minutes every hour or so has been shown to help and can also increase your energy, clear your mind, improve mood and posture, and increase blood flow.”
