Crystal Gray landed a nurse manager position at Michigan Medicine after the fall 2016 career fair.

Looking to enter a career as a nurse, advanced practice nurse, or physician assistant? The Michigan Medicine spring 2017 career fair, which will be held Sunday, March 19 at the Kensington Hotel in Ann Arbor, is a chance to meet with hiring managers from departments across the organization, learn about available positions and start your journey down an exciting new career path.

That’s what happened to Nurse Manager Crystal Gray, who began working at Michigan Medicine after attending the fall 2016 career fair.

Check out her story below.

Why did you choose nursing as a career path?

CG: Nursing ended up being a second career for me, but it should have been my first and only! I love people and have always enjoyed caring for others. Nursing is filled with endless opportunities to do just that.

What was your experience like at the fall 2016 recruiting fair?

CG: I was amazed at the level of organization and professionalism. I have been to events like this at other institutions and found this to be the most enjoyable. The introduction of the entire recruitment team, including the chief nursing officer, and the overview of Michigan Medicine they give to every recruit made me feel as if I already belonged. All of the managers and supervisors I met that day were truly engaged and genuine.

What do you love about your new job?

CG: I have found that the culture at Michigan Medicine is one of inclusion and have felt very welcomed as a result. I also feel as if I have a voice at the table and am truly a part of the team. I have worked very hard to be a strong advocate for patients as well as nurses throughout my career, and Michigan Medicine has made me feel that these are the organization’s true priorities, as well.

What has been the best part about your transition to Michigan Medicine?

CG: The best parts of my transition have been the opportunities I’ve had to learn and build relationships. I have found, in the short time that I have been here, that I have had numerous options to be active in innovation, such as working with my MPLAN partner to improve quality outcomes for our patients. There have also been educational retreats for the nursing staff to build knowledge and teamwork. Finally, there is ample support for project management, certification offerings, self-care and mindfulness training and endless manager-to-manager mentoring opportunities.

Would you recommend job seekers attend the spring recruiting fair and why?

CG: I would encourage those that may not even be seeking a position here to attend, because it will likely change their mind! This is a world-class health care system and the recruiting event is just a sample of the great opportunities that lie ahead.
