Duo Security required when working from home or traveling

January 6, 2017  //  FOUND IN: Updates & Resources

Effective Feb. 1, Duo Security for two-factor authentication will be required when accessing the following systems:

  • Outlook on the web (UMHS Outlook email accessed through a web browser and off the UMHS network)
  • VPN remote access to UMHS systems using Cisco AnyConnect

To access your email via the web or to use VPN for remote access, you will need to be enrolled in Duo prior to Feb. 1. Please note that UMHS Kiosk machines will NOT require Duo when using Outlook on the web.

Here is what you need to know:

Why will two-factor authentication (Duo) be required?

Strong passwords are essential, but they aren’t enough. Phishing attacks and data breaches put all your passwords and personal or sensitive data at risk. Two-factor authentication provides additional security so that anyone trying to access your accounts must provide two proofs of identification: 1) Something you know, such as your password, as well as 2) Something you have, such as a passcode, a phone number or even a mobile app.

What you need to do:

  • If you already use two-factor (Duo): You don’t need to do anything. You can expect to receive Duo prompts when accessing Outlook on the web and when using VPN beginning on Feb. 1. (Please note that if you only use Duo for electronic prescription of controlled substances (EPCS), you will need to enroll in the U-M instance of Duo.)
  • If you do not currently use two-factor (Duo): Please enroll in Duo before Feb. 1. This way you will be ready to use it when prompted by Outlook on the web and/or VPN. See Duo Two-Factor Security for more information and several options to choose from when you enroll.

Faculty and other instructional staff: Please note that by enrolling in Duo and using two-factor at U-M, you will automatically be required to use two-factor authentication to access many additional U-M systems that require it, including Time Approval, Faculty Business and more.
