Program aims to reduce metabolic syndrome symptoms

Do you have obesity, high blood pressure, high fasting sugar and high cholesterol? If so, you may have metabolic syndrome. 

This syndrome can be reduced or eliminated with positive lifestyle changes. Join the physician-referred Metabolic Fitness Program to address your health concerns.

The UMHS Metabolic Fitness Program is a structured group that encourages behavioral changes by combining education, coaching strategies and clinically-supervised group exercise.

The 90-minute sessions, held on Tuesday evenings, include 45 minutes of lecture and 45 minutes of clinically-supervised exercise. There are two class times to choose from: 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., and 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. 

New participants must be referred to the program by a physician and new attendees would start on the second Tuesday of each month. There are 3 hours of initial appointments in the 2-4 weeks before each monthly start, with a 12-hour fasting blood draw a couple of days before the visits. There would also be a 1-hour nutrition consult in the 1-3 weeks following the first session.

If your insurer participates with UMHS, your clinic appointments should be covered and you would just have your copay and any deductibles that apply

This is a 24-week program with a 12-week option, and has an out-of-pocket expense of $350 per each 12-week session that insurance doesn’t cover. Your payment options include a payroll deduction with your U-M employee ID.
