Blue Jeans: A videoconferencing tool for collaboration and scholarship

Connect with collaborators and meeting attendees anywhere in the world without worrying about compatibility of software, hardware, or devices using Blue Jeans.

Blue Jeans is free to all faculty, staff, students, and sponsored affiliates of participating units (such as UMHS, see the full list of participating units). The service offers a user-friendly interface, high-resolution telepresence videoconferencing, and real-time content and video sharing. Microsoft Lync users can connect seamlessly across the medical campus, and recorded Grand Rounds lectures may be watched on-demand.

Medical School Information Services (MSIS) and Medical Center Information Technology (MCIT) recently partnered with Information and Technology Services (ITS) to fund Blue Jeans through May 31, 2017. ITS serves as the administrator for Blue Jeans and bills a share of the contract cost to units. Previously, the University of Michigan Office of the CIO funded a two-year contract.

Besides being user-friendly, one of the features that sets Blue Jeans apart from other video conferencing systems is the ability to share some types of sensitive university data, including (under certain circumstances) Protected Health Information (PHI). Although a user account is required to schedule, host, or moderate a Blue Jeans meeting, it is not needed to take part in one. Participants can attend a Blue Jeans conference from multiple locations using a variety of devices, including telephone (voice only), smartphone, tablet, laptop, or video conference room system.
