MCIT Teams Show Marked Improvement to MiChart Performance
Recent upgrades to servers supporting MiChart have shown significant performance improvements to the application. MiChart records when workflows exceed the target response time and as the graph below reflects, the upgrade has remarkably cut response time exception percentages nearly in half.
Examples of workflows that have commonly exceeded the target response time are opening the Visit Navigator, opening Patient Summary windows, and opening the InBasket Launch Folder.
In addition to improving end user response time, the new system is also significantly improving “batch” type work. For example, the hospital billing nightly processing job frequently would take over 12 hours to run prior to the upgrade. Post-upgrade run times have reduced this by a third, often taking less than three hours to complete. Reporting workbench runs have also benefited greatly from the upgrade, decreasing many report run times by over 80 percent.
Technical performance improvements include:
- The database memory cache was more than doubled
- Read input/output activity was reduced by over 30 percent
- Random read to disk times were reduced from six to seven milliseconds to less than 1 millisecond
What does this mean for MiChart users? A faster, smoother experience while utilizing the application.
Building upon the server upgrade’s performance improvements, there are even more enhancements to be made. Additional server upgrades, set to roll out over the next few months, will help to address workflow response times related to the performance of the MiChart application on UMHS computers. Other MiChart functionality issues, such as those related to the processor speed, will require more time and effort to improve. Regardless, all MCIT teams involved continue to provide excellent service and work to improve systems for Health System staff supporting our patients and families here at UMHS.
