Looking to enter or expand your career in nursing? The UMHS spring Nurse Recruiting Fair is coming up on March 20th, a chance to meet with hiring managers from many hospital departments, learn about available positions, and start your journey on an exciting new career path.

But don’t take our word for it. Meet C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital Emergency Services RN Chase Zebari, who landed his job shortly after attending the same event one year ago.

HH: Why did you choose nursing as a career path?

CZ: I chose to pursue a career in nursing because I’m able to make a meaningful and positive impact during every shift. There are multiple ways to build on a career in nursing, whether it’s within the field or crossing over into a different healthcare profession, and that strongly appealed to me.  Nursing is a noble career and I wanted to help contribute to that.  A vast amount of knowledge and critical thinking is required in nursing, which enables us to grow.  My parents always taught me to be a kind and loving person, and those instilled values helped lead me to choosing this great career field – it’s a perfect fit!

HH: What was your experience attending the UMHS Nurse Recruiting Fair?

CZ:  I attended the spring 2015 recruiting fair. It was exactly what I needed.  I was able to make many positive connections with multiple departments.  Every unit had a booth set up with poster boards and information about their respective departments, which is not something you find at other recruitment fairs.  The staff members working the event were welcoming and helpful.  Upon arrival, each participant was given a nice care package with information regarding nursing at UMHS. Personally, I was focused on one position at the career fair: the Emergency Services Graduate Nurse Residency program.  I hear many great things about it and I wanted that opportunity.  It was the first booth I interacted with and luckily they saw something in me and extended an invitation to interview a few days later.

HH: How was the UMHS Nurse Recruiting Fair different and/or better than any other work search experience you’ve had?

CZ: My work search in the past was always a little hectic; applying to multiple hospital systems for a variety of positions is not always easy. I knew about the event months in advance because it was so well broadcast to all nursing programs within the Metro Detroit area. This event was well organized and strictly for nurse positions. My job search was very refined; I only applied at the University of Michigan Health System because I wanted to be a part of a world-class organization and contribute to that brand.

HH: What do you love about your job?

CZ: I love everything about being a nurse – and at UMHS, it’s more than just a job, it’s a career.  I love working with patients and their families.  Knowing I have the ability to help them smile or laugh while they are at their most vulnerable is something that brings me great joy. There’s something different that happens every day, and that helps to keep work interesting and fun.  I also have awesome coworkers.  Our teamwork and camaraderie is unmatched; 12- to16-hour midnight shifts move quickly when you work with people like I do.  Lastly, I love pediatrics because taking care of kids is completely different than taking care of adults.  Children offer a unique, innocent, and refreshing perspective – sometimes it takes a 5-year-old to help you understand what life is all about.

HH: Would you recommend job seekers attend this fair and why?

CZ: All job seekers need to attend this event!  It is an incredible opportunity to network and meet the managers of every unit within UMHS.  This is a great and dynamic organization to be a part of, one with rich benefits and an inclusive environment.  I really feel like I’m a part of something bigger and that the work I do truly makes a difference.
