Medical School, Nursing faculty join interprofessional curriculum workgroup

Faculty from the Medical School and School of Nursing have been appointed to a new Interprofessional Curriculum Workgroup charged with examining the curricula and accreditation standards for each of the professions and developing a curricular map for interprofessional education (IPE) across the University of Michigan’s health sciences schools.

The workgroup was created by the Michigan Center for Interprofessional Education and includes representatives from the Medical School, College of Pharmacy, and schools of Dentistry, Kinesiology, Nursing, Public Health, Social Work, and Health Professions and Studies (Flint).

Matthew M. Davis, M.D., a professor of pediatrics and communicable diseases, and internal medicine, and Joseph B. House, M.D., an assistant professor of pediatrics and communicable diseases, and emergency medicine, are representing the Medical School. Nicole L. Boucher, Ph.D., R.N., a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Health Behavior and Biological Sciences, and Christine Leech, R.N., a clinical instructor, are representing the School of Nursing.

“I am very pleased,” says Frank J. Ascione, Ph.D., director of the center, “to see individuals from so many schools collaborating effectively to plan our future IPE curriculum.  I look forward to the wonderful ideas they will generate on how to best educate our students.”

One of the key challenges facing the IPE workgroup is the lack of common time in students’ schedules across programs. The first item of business is to engage the IPE Executive Committee in finding a window of time when students’ schedules could be aligned so they will be available to take courses with colleagues from across the health disciplines.
