U-M heart surgeon Dr. Jonathan Haft, with brothers Domonique and Stanley Larkin, on set with Dr. Nandi.

The brothers who helped make heart history, along with their U-M heart surgeon Dr. Jonathan Haft, will appear Monday on a special episode of “Ask Dr. Nandi.” The show is devoted to medical marvels and the high-tech devices that help heart failure patients survive.

Domonique Larkin and his brother Stan Larkin both relied on a total artificial heart after their hearts were weakened by cardiomyopathy. Domonique received a new donor heart on Jan. 22, and Stan lives a history-making life as he awaits transplantation.

Stan is the first person released from a Michigan hospital using a backpack-sized portable device, called a Freedom Driver, that keeps the total artificial heart going. His heart was removed and replaced with the pneumatic total artificial heart, with the goal of bridging him to heart transplantation.

“Ask Dr. Nandi” airs on several different stations/carriers at 1 p.m., Monday through Friday

  • Dish, Channel 268
  • Direct TV, Channel 380
  • Comcast Michigan (Channel 400)
