U-M’s Home Care Services provides complimentary “Art Chairs” during Art Fair

July in Ann Arbor means it’s time for the annual Ann Arbor Art Fair. The University of Michigan Health System’s Home Care Services – MedEQUIP division, will once again be providing wheelchairs to the public at no charge with its “Art Chairs” service.

Actually comprised of four simultaneous fairs, the Ann Arbor Art Fair runs Wednesday, July 15 – Saturday, July 18. It is one of the largest art fairs in the country, attracting half a million visitors and more than one thousand artists, vendors and exhibits. To better cover this huge event, Home Care Services will again host three booths stationed throughout the fair.

For the last six years, Home Care Services has offered complimentary wheelchairs so everyone can enjoy the Art Fair. People who may have temporary mobility issues or cannot tolerate walking long distances, such as the elderly, are the primary customers for this service. In 2014, Home Care Services provided wheelchairs to more than 150 people over the four-day period.

“The Art Chairs program is a very popular service that continues to grow each year," says Will Siembor, Home Care Services brand manager. “Many of the people who have used the service over the years have shared with us that attending the fair would not have been possible without the Art Chairs program.”

All three Art Chairs booth locations are adjacent to either the Ann Arbor Transit Authority’s ArtFairRide from Briarwood Mall and Pioneer High School or the Trinity Northside Park & Ride Art Fair Shuttle from Huron High School, as well as by the Fair’s Art-Go-Round service, which links all the Fairs at shuttle stops and parking structures.

In addition, wheelchairs that are signed out at one location may be dropped off at any of the three Art Chairs locations. Wheelchairs may be signed out beginning at 10 a.m., when the fair opens each day. Visitors are asked to return the chairs by 8:30 p.m., a half hour before the fair closes Wednesday-Friday, and an hour before the fair ends on Saturday, by 5 p.m.

Some volunteers are still needed to help give out the wheelchairs. Volunteers will receive a free Art Chairs t-shirt and be shown the basics of the wheelchairs operation. If interested, please contact Amy at amyg@umich.edu .
