Tom Shanley, M.D., appointed to chair positions at NU, Lurie Children’s Hospital

Thomas P. Shanley, M.D.

Thomas P. Shanley, M.D., has been named chair of the Department of Pediatrics in the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University. He also will be the Founders’ Board Centennial Professor and chair of the Department of Medicine at the Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, president of the Pediatric Faculty Foundation, and chief research officer of the Stanley Manne Children’s Research Institute.

Shanley, who has served as the Medical School’s associate dean for clinical and translational research, and director of the Michigan Institute for Clinical and Health Research (MICHR) since 2011, joined the U-M faculty in 2004 as associate professor of pediatrics and communicable diseases. He was named the Janette Ferrantino Endowed Professor of Pediatrics in 2005, and achieved the rank of full professor in 2009. From 2004-11, he was director of pediatric critical care medicine at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital.

An internationally recognized physician-scientist with expertise in acute lung injury and inflammation, Shanley is a member of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) Clinical and Translational Sciences Awards (CTSA) Consortium Steering Committee, the Association of American Medical Colleges Deans NIH Working Group, co-chair of the Lifespan Research Taskforce for the CTSA Consortium within NCATS, member of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Pediatric Trauma and Critical Illness Branch Strategic Planning Group, and he has been appointed program committee chair, Pediatric Academic Societies Annual Meeting for 2018 and 2019.

His return to the Chicago area will take him back to a familiar place, as he earned his medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.
