Gray, Ph.D., who has been editor since 2000.

Announcing this appointment, Christopher F. Koller, who becomes President of the Milbank Memorial Fund on July 15, said that Markel is “superbly qualified to maintain and enhance the Quarterly’s role as a leading international journal of health care policy and population health.”

Markel will continue his current work as a professor, researcher, author, educator, and public health policy advisor. He serves as the George E. Wantz Distinguished Professor of the History of Medicine and Director of the Center for the History of Medicine at the Medical School, where he also holds professorial appointments in psychiatry, public health, history, English literature and language, and pediatrics and communicable diseases.

A critically acclaimed historian of medicine, he has written more than 350 articles in peer-reviewed journals and the popular press. His most recent volume is the national best-seller An Anatomy of Addiction: Sigmund Freud, William Halsted, and the Miracle Drug, Cocaine (Pantheon/Alfred Knopf Books, 2011), which was reviewed on the front page of The New York Times Book Review and described as “a tour-de-force of scientific and social history.”

An internationally known authority on the social history of epidemics and quarantine, Dr. Markel leads a research team investigating the effectiveness of public health interventions during influenza pandemics from 1918 to the present. With the growth of medical care expenses and the ongoing challenges to the health of populations and communities, the need for thought-provoking, peer-reviewed, and socially relevant interdisciplinary research and writing in the health services field will only grow in the coming years. The Quarterly will be one of the key places to find such critical information for health care policymakers and scholars as well as population health practitioners,” Markel said.

Noting that President Koller has also asked him to advise about other publications of the Fund, he added, “I look forward to the challenge of using electronic and print media to expand the audiences for the achievements of this great foundation and the stellar work of our colleagues and contributors.”

About the Milbank Memorial Fund

The Milbank Memorial Fund is an endowed operating foundation that works to improve health by helping decision makers in the public and private sectors acquire and use the best available evidence to inform policy for health care and population health.

In order to provide and sustain exemplary care in high loss environments, it is essential for caregivers to have an immense desire to serve those who are dying and an awareness of their personal beliefs about dying, death and end of life care.

Caregivers must have the courage to tend to the losses they have already encountered if they want to provide tender, compassionate care to the patients and families they serve each day. It is difficult work; it is upfront and personal; it is not an intellectual exercise. You cannot tend to the dying and their family and not be constantly reminded that you, your loved ones could be gone in the blink of an eye. It is an awareness that can unsettle the caregiver, but can also be a gateway to living more fully in the moment and honoring what is important in their lives. To witness another’s humanity throughout the death process is one of the most precious gifts we as human beings can give each other.

Knowing how to comfort ourselves is essential for maintaining every caregiver’s health and well-being. The desire to serve another who is suffering and dying is not enough. You must constantly replenish the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual parts of your being if you are to bring your best self forward. To comfort is to soothe oneself and others.

In addition to engaging in routine practices that bring comfort, it is essential to create a workplace environment where expressing grief is acceptable. Supportive relationships provide a safe haven where the caregiver can sit with their grief and integrate its meaning into their life. Knowing how to ask for and give help are key ingredients to building a workplace culture where grief can be expressed openly.

Lastly, there is nothing more important than self-care to keep ourselves open to that which needs our attention. Because our plates are often full, it is easy to shortchange ourselves when it comes to self-care. Without proper self-care, the caregiver, no matter how dedicated he/she may be, will lose their passion for the work they once loved. So it is important for the caregiver to reflect on what brings them joy, and to use their caregiving experiences to deepen their compassion for self and others.

Self-care differs from one person to another; there is no universal recipe that nourishes all. Your goal is to put together a recipe that provides ongoing sustenance to the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of your nature. Renewal has many forms. Some find renewal by hiking trails, while others bake bread; some meditate, while others scratch the head of their beloved pet; some find peacefulness in a beautiful sunset, while others find release in expressing gratitude. May you create a self-care recipe that leaves you feeling safe, peaceful and at ease in your life.
