A first look at the U-M Emergency Department renovations

Renovations to add 27 beds and 5,800 square feet to University of Michigan’s Emergency Department are scheduled to wrap up this winter.

Here’s a first look at a few areas that have been completed – psychiatric emergency services, which opened for patients last week, and the new emergency waiting room and entrance, which opened a few days earlier.

The $17.7 million renovation also redesigns and expands the arrival and triage area, as well as expands and improves patient treatment rooms. The Board of Regents approved the project in May 2010.

“We continue to see steady growth in patient visits to our Emergency Department. This renovation helps support the ongoing quality initiatives and improvement efforts we are making,” said Dr. William Barsan, chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine in the Medical School.
