U-M faculty discuss breast cancer with Styleline Magazine

Kathy Diehl, M.D., and Max Wicha, M.D., both from the University of Michigan, spoke with Detroit’s Styleline Magazine about breast cancer research and awareness.

Diehl, a breast surgeon and associate professor of surgery in the U-M Medical School, discussed different methods to prevent breast cancer, including eating fruits and vegetables, consuming soy and good fats, exercising, and abstaining from alcohol.

“Because there can be conflicting information, I talk about doing these things in moderation,” Diehl says. “The things we talk about doing for breast cancer are good for you for many reasons.”

Wicha, the director of the U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center, talked with the magazine about research the university is doing to eliminate cancer stem cells in breast cancer patients.

“It’s like leaving the seeds or roots of a plant and killing the leaves,” Wicha says. “The therapies we have now are very good at killing other cancerous cells but not stem cells. We need to use agents that get rid of the leaves and the roots.”
