Don’t let the "fiscal cliff" gut NIH research funding, UMHS leaders say

In an opinion column published in the Detroit Free Press, the top three leaders of the U-M Health System call for Congress and the president to reach a budget deal during “fiscal cliff” negotiations that preserves research funding from the National Institutes of Health.

Unless a deal is reached that protects the NIH, the agency will face an across-the-board cut of more than 8 percent of its budget in 2013. That could jeopardize many research projects, and lead UMHS to lose nearly $11 million in medical research funding.
