System maintenance impacting clinical staff Saturday (April 21)

There will be a change affecting the Laboratory Information System on Saturday, April 21. Please note that while this will impact your workflow, UM-CareLink, CareWeb, and Centricity will remain available.

PathNet, the Laboratory Information System, will be down from 1- 10 p.m. on Saturday.

What Will Be Affected:

  • Lab Specimen Labels will not print via the normal UM-CareLink process.
  • New Lab Results will not be available in their usual locations in CareWeb, UM-CareLink, and Centricity.
  • See the “During the Downtime” section below for more information about alternate workflows.

    Before the Downtime:

  • Ordering Clinicians: Please coordinate planned lab tests to occur before the start of the downtime at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
  • Nurses: Please collect any scheduled labs prior to the start of the downtime at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
  • Clerks: 1. CareLink will print requisitions during the downtime, but please ensure that your unit is stocked with paper requisition forms as a backup. 2. Please ensure that your unit is stocked with standard document labels for specimen labeling.
  • During the Downtime:

Order Entry: Please limit your lab orders to those that are medically urgent during this time. For the orders that must occur, you can place them using the normal UM-CareLink order entry process during the downtime.

Specimen Collection: Clicking “Add Specimen” in UM-CareLink will not generate a specimen label during the downtime. Instead, it will generate a printed requisition form for the lab test(s) on your unit. Make sure to label your specimen with a standard document label and send the specimen to the lab with the requisition form. Be sure to sign any Type and Screen specimens you collect before sending them for processing.

Lab Results: All lab results produced during the downtime will appear in the Imaged Documents section of CareWeb, under the Category “Lab Result Downtime.” All labs will continue to be posted during the downtime except “No Growth to Date” and “Normal Flora” Microbiology results, as well as Blood Gas results. Adult Blood Gas lab results will be provided directly to the ICUs or the lab will call the results to the general care units. Pediatric Blood Gas lab results will be delivered to the nurse units/caregivers. Critical labs will continue to be called to clinicians.

If you need any help locating lab results during the downtime, please call Pathology Specimen Processing at 936-6777.

    After the Downtime:

Specimen Labels: Specimen labels will be printed for all of the prior “nurse-collected” specimens that were collected during the downtime. Therefore, these “extraneous labels” should be discarded according to PHI disposal guidelines. However, be careful not to discard any newly printed labels (representing new orders after PathNet is back up).

Lab Results: Once the downtime is complete, lab results and specimen label printing will resume their normal functions. Immediately following the downtime, lab results may not be complete in CareWeb, UM-CareLink, and Centricity until all of the results generated during the downtime have been processed.

For help during the downtime, contact the MCIT Service Desk by calling 936-8000.

Please relay this message to your staff or others as necessary.
