Important news on parking, for you and our patients

There’s a new plan to improve the parking experience for our patients and visitors, while also easing the employee parking crunch on the main medical campus.

The new plan includes separate parking areas for patients and staff in the Mott and Taubman structures, and a new policy about staff use of patient parking areas.

It also reduces the impact on Blue parking in the Mott structure. Instead of 470 spaces closing, the number of spaces closing will be 295.

This plan responds to concerns heard from both employees and patients in recent surveys.

Here are the key changes that will take effect around the time the new hospital opens on Dec. 5. You can learn much more, and see answers to questions about these changes, at www.med.umich.edu/u/parking:

• The Taubman and Mott structures will both be divided into patient areas and staff areas, with separate entrances for each. The addition of patient parking at the Mott structure will make it easy for ill children, pregnant women, bone marrow transplant patients and their families to park.

• The Taubman staff parking area will only be for Physician Gold permits and special programs such as those for carpools/vanpools and staff whose shifts start at unusual times. The Mott structure’s staff parking area will have 837 Blue permit spaces, and 50 Open Gold permit spaces.

• Faculty and staff will no longer be allowed to park in patient/visitor areas of all parking structures, even during off-peak hours – unless they are patients themselves, or are accompanying or visiting a patient.

• The new names of the parking structures are in effect — see this map.

There is currently plenty of open orange commuter parking capacity every day at the North Campus Research Complex and Crisler Arena, with convenient bus service every 10 minutes starting at 6:30 a.m. from NCRC (three bus options to/from the medical campus) and at 6 a.m. from Crisler.

Other park-and-ride lots, such as Glazier Way, Green Road and two on Fuller Road, are also available. Hundreds of new spaces have been added in the past year. We’re working to add more commuter lot capacity in coming months.
