Judy Birk, J.D., has been named interim director of the Institutional Review Boards of the University of Michigan Medical School.
Birk has served as the director of the Health Sciences and Behavioral Sciences IRBs since 2003, reporting to the Office of the Vice President for Research, and was formerly the director of Patient Relations for the U-M Health System.
Birk, who will be responsible for daily oversight of the operations of the IRBs and their regulatory compliance, will be serving in a dual director role of the IRBs during a national search for a permanent director. As a long-standing staff member at U-M, Judy has served on multiple compliance, ethics and research regulatory committees.
Birk’s colleagues have noted her willingness to share her leadership, deep regulatory knowledge and insights during this time of transition.
