Nursing dean Kathleen Potempa co-authors Detroit Free Press op-ed on nurse practitioners

The dean of the U-M School of Nursing has co-authored an opinion column in the Detroit Free Press, calling for the passage of a bill that would give more clinical authority to Michigan’s advanced practice nurses, including nurse practitioners, nurse midwives and clinical nurse specialists. Kathleen Potempa, Ph.D., co-authored the piece with the deans of the Wayne State University and Michigan State University nursing schools.

The bill, introduced by a state senator from Grand Rapids, would bring Michigan into line with 19 other states and the District of Columbia. It would allow advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) to provide primary care and other health services with more autonomy than is currently allowed.
